National Economy

Bohemia is an interesting mix of socialist and capitalist economic principles. The founders of the nation tried to take the best aspects of both economic theories and combine them.

Socialist Economic Principles

For the most part, the primary means of production, distribution and exchange of value are owned and governed wholly by the nation state of Bohemia. These include the 13 National Industries and all revenue generated from these Industries contribute to the National Revenue. Bohemia allows for ownership of private personal property but limits what can be individually owned as private property. For instance, no land-based structures, buildings, facilities or infrastructure can be owned by either an individual, a group of individuals or even a Clann.

Examples of personal private property can include the following: personal land-based or airborne vehicles or ships (although there are rules governing where these can and cannot be parked and for how long) as well as personal possessions (clothing, weapons, gear and other miscellaneous personal items). All other structures, buildings, facilities, infrastructure and ships are state owned and all the revenue generated by every legal revenue generating source within the Nation funds the National Treasury which in turn funds the National Budget.

Capitalist Economic Principles

Despite having a largely socialist economic foundation, Bohemia acknowledges the benefits of certain Capitalist principles. They also do not wish to curtail the freedom of their Citizens as this is a fundamental value of theirs. For this reason, entrepreneurial Citizens are legally permitted to set up their own privately owned service businesses with the express goal of making a profit in an open competitive market. They acknowledge that this also encourages innovation and self expression.

There are, however, strict rules regarding the structure and function of these privately owned businesses. These businesses must be entirely owned and governed by Bohemian Citizens, with no foreign interests or stakes permitted. Foreign-owned or governed companies or corporations are not permitted to engage in trade within Bohemia. These privately owned businesses cannot compete directly with revenue generating economic activities within the primary economic sector, which relates mostly to resources extraction and harvesting.

For example, an enterprising Citizen could not set up a mine and start extracting iron ore from the ground. The economic activities of these privately owned businesses tend to constrain themselves to the secondary and tertiary economic sectors, however, if the proposed business proposition too closely reflects an existing Nationally owned economic activity then the business proposal will be rejected. For example, if an enterprising Citizen sought to set up a manufacturing business with the proposed goal of creating building materials, such a proposal would be rejected as it is neither innovative nor unique, and moreover it directly competes with the National Manufacturing Industry.

Alternatively, if a Citizen came up with an idea to manufacture and sell a product that was sufficiently unique and innovative and which did not already exist, then this business proposal would likely be accepted. The proposed business plan should aim to contribute positively to Bohemia without adversely impacting the functioning of the National Industries or the physical or psychological health of Bohemian Citizens.

National Revenue

Much like most economies there are three economic sectors. These include the primary sector, which relates mostly to resources extraction and harvesting; then the secondary sector, which relates more to utilising resources for processing, manufacturing, and construction; and finally there is the tertiary sector which relates to services. Each of the 13 National Industries falls somewhere within one of the three economic sectors. All revenue generated from all sources within each of the 13 National Industries serve to fund the National Treasury. These also include income generated by the National Military during off-planet military operations; such as spoils of war, mercenary escort work, mercenary patrol work, planet terraforming, mercenary bounty hunting. The assets within the National Treasury are used to fund the annual National Budget as well as the National Treasury Reserves.

Trading and Freight Services

Bohemia, having inherited their proclivity for trading from their Irish ancestors, is just beginning to establish its reputation as a reliable and resourceful trading Nation. They have begun to increase their trading network and now have several supply chains with key foreign trading partners. Bohemia trade in all commodities, products and resources, however, the one area of trade that they have not sought to expand into is that of data and intelligence. Bohemia also specialise in end to end freight contract services. This economic activity contributes the largest portion of revenue to the National Treasury. Foreign paying customers can rest assured that their precious cargo will reach the destination in one piece as Bohemia also utilise the National Military to provide a robust security escort.

Fimbul Ship Manufacturing

The manufacture of Fimbul ships is one of the primary sources of National Revenue. Bohemia are just becoming renowned throughout Galia for their manufacturing of high quality Fimbul ships. Whilst various food harvests are still currently their primary export, it is hoped that in the coming years Fimbul ships will become the primary export. It is for this reason that Bohemia have invested heavily into creating a modest network of small mining outposts, ensuring the future supply of necessary crafting resources.

National Budget

The National Budget is used to fund all activities of every National Industry including all public services; the construction and maintenance of all national infrastructure; funding for each of the Clanns; as well as the funding of all National Military forces and operations. As a general rule, every building or structure that is land-based is nationally owned, however, many airborne ships and structures (including the planet’s Space Station) are also nationally owned.
